Staying Secure: Making Child Passenger Safety Week Count
Matthew Gipson
It's easy to overlook something as crucial as child car seat safety amidst the chaos of everyday life. Yet, the importance of ensuring that children are safely restrained in vehicles cannot be overstated. During Child Passenger Safety Week, observed from September 21-27, take the time to verify that your car setup is right where it should be for the safety of your little ones.
Strap Positioning
The correct positioning of harness straps is essential. These straps must be snug and free of twists, lying flat across your child's body. The chest clip needs to be secured level with your child's armpits. A few minutes to double-check can make all the difference.
Choose the Right Seat
Selecting the appropriate car seat for your child means aligning it with their age, height, and weight. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) car seat finder is an excellent resource for ensuring your selection is spot-on. Remember, each child is unique, and so should be the car seat that protects them.
Check the Installation
Did you know that over half of all car seats are incorrectly installed? Your child's seat must not move more than an inch when you pull it at the base — using either a seat belt or a LATCH system, but not both. A secure seat provides a secure child.
Know When to Transition
While it might be tempting to move to the next stage of car seats as soon as your child reaches the minimum requirements, every shift reduces the level of safety. Allow plenty of time for each stage, as lingering is often the safer choice.
Get a Free Inspection
Consider having your car seat installation checked by a local certified technician. Even the slightest adjustment may significantly elevate the protective measures for your child. What might seem minor could indeed be a matter of life and death.
Remember, small oversights in these setups can lead to serious consequences. During Child Passenger Safety Week, use this opportunity to inspect your setup. If any legal concerns arise this fall, feel assured that reaching out for support is more than okay; it’s encouraged. After all, safeguarding your child's well-being is always the right path to follow.
